Lee Hudspeth has been playing guitar for many decades now… since he was a teenager. He and a friend recently wrote and recorded four original songs and released them as the EP The High Road on all major streaming and download platforms. Scroll down for a more detailed description of music’s influence on Lee, then and now.

Music's Influence in My Life

Early Memories

Some of my earliest memories are of playing 45 rpm records on a portable turntable the size of a large lunch box. As a teenager I was influenced by artists like Jackson Browne; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Joni Mitchell; The Allman Brothers Band; The Beatles; Jimi Hendrix; Mountain; Cream… In college, I discovered Steely Dan, Elton John, Frank Zappa, King Crimson and Mahavishnu Orchestra, to name just a few.

I started taking guitar lessons in my early teens. I sang in church choir and played guitar in a Christian youth ministry band. We played in our local church and toured throughout my home state. Two friends from that band and I formed a power trio garage band. In the intervening years I’ve continued to play and listen to music in a wide variety of styles.

Recent Happenings

In early 2017 my friend Jeff Baker and I co-wrote four original songs. I had long dreamed of recording original material in a professional studio. Together we arranged, performed and produced these songs at Studio 637 in Hermosa Beach, California. Lyrical inspiration for the songs largely came from poems I had composed about friendship, the nature of being human, the vibrant sensation of creativity, and embracing the wonder of life despite its hardships. Jeff supplied the melodies along with his wonderful, rich lead vocal interpretations. The two of us played all the guitar parts.

In 2018 we released our debut EP The High Road under the band name The Porch Project. Although each song is unique, for categorization purposes The Porch Project’s overall sound is alternative/indie/alt-rock with elements of singer/songwriter-folk, folk-rock and adult contemporary. (Labels put things into boxes. Labels are overly simplistic and don’t do justice to the creative work being described, but I’ll defer that lengthy philosophical conversation for another time. Check my blog for similar mental musings.)

Jeff has subsequently released a heartfelt, inspiring solo album entitled TBD. I highly recommend that you give it a listen. Find out more about Jeff’s album TBD here.
